Why Have More Than One Church Service Per Week?

A church is to assemble for many reasons – worship, fellowship and care, ministry, etc. One of the main reasons we are to attend church is to be “fed” the Word of God. Pastors are commanded to “feed the flock of God”, I Peter 5:2. The Bible says that pastors are given to the church for the “perfecting of the saints” in Ephesians 4:11-12. Pastors are instructed to “labour in Word and doctrine” in I Timothy 5:17, and are told to “preach the Word” in II Timothy 4:2. When the Apostle Paul was saying farewell to the elders at Ephesus in Acts 20, after spending three years with them he declared that he had given them “all the counsel of God” in Acts 20:27. He instructed them to “feed the church of God” in Acts 20:28. Jesus commanded His disciples to teach others to observe “all things whatsoever I have commanded you” in Matthew 28:20.

The pulpit ministry of every church must be based upon the premise that the Word of God is “powerful” and that it has the power to transform lives (see Hebrews 4:12). Sadly, many churches and church members have lost sight of the importance of being fed God’s Word in church. Churches have reduced the number of services they hold during the week, opting for home meetings or no other services at all. “People are too busy” and other excuses are given.

How can God’s children properly grow when they only have one meal a week? God promised that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” in Romans 10:17. It is the Pastor that was commanded to feed his flock, not radio preachers, magazines, etc.

Churches need multiple services per week so God’s people can be properly fed God’s powerful Word and they can grow as God desires them to.

God’s people need to understand the importance of faithfully attending all church services so they can get the spiritual meals God intended for them. All Christians are commanded to be “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together” in Hebrews 10:25. How rude is it to not attend and feast on a meal of teaching or preaching that the Pastor has “laboured” over? God’s pastors will answer at the judgment for whether or not they fed God’s flocks, and God’s people will answer at the judgment for whether or not they were faithful.

The churches would have congregations of more mature Christians if they had many services every week where God’s people are fed God’s word by God’s Pastor!
